PRINCETON, NJ – Eight trips to the penalty box cost the Ryerson Rams two power play goals and eventually the game in a 6-3 loss at the hands of the Princeton Tigers.
The Rams were in New Jersey playing the Tigers, a Division I NCAA hockey program, as part of their exhibition schedule.
Princeton started out the game with four unanswered goals past Ryerson starter Troy Passingham, including once on the powerplay. Steve Taylor (Sudbury, Ont.) eventually got Ryerson on the board at 10:32 of the second period with assists to Lucas Froese (Grunthal, Man.) and Matthew Andreacchi (Mississauga, Ont.). Shortly after, Rams captain Andrew Buck (Newmarket, Ont.) scored on the powerplay and the deficit was cut to two.
Jack Berger, on the powerplay, extended the Tigers lead back to three with their second powerplay goal of the night at 14:04 of the second period. Princeton’s top line of Berger , Andrew Calof (1G, 3A) and Tucker Brockett (2G, 1A) combined for nine points.
Steve Gleeson (Toronto) and Passingham split the time in net for the Rams with each playing around 30 minutes. Passingham gave up four goals on 18 shots while Gleeson allowed two on 13 shots.
Ryerson was assessed 18 penalties with six of them being 10-minute misconducts. In total, Ryerson accumulated 76 penalty minutes.
NOTES
– Michael Fine scored Ryerson’s third goal at 5:26 of the third period.
– The two teams will hold a scrimmage on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
– The match was the first for Princeton in the 2013-14 season. They start their NCAA regular season on Nov. 1 against Cornell.
– Ryerson is back in OUA action on Thursday, Oct. 24 for Student Night against the Guelph Gryphons. Puck drop at the Mattamy Athletic Centre is slated for 7:30 p.m.
