TORONTO – If there were any doubts where the Ryerson Rams women’s basketball scoring would come from in the 2012-13 season, Angela Tilk answered them.  Tilk led the Rams with 30 points and 18 rebounds, to a 63-47 victory over the visiting York Lions.  The afternoon match-up, played at Coca-Cola Court, was part of the grand opening festivities at the Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens.

The Rams came out of the gate ready to play, taking a 12-5 lead halfway through the first quarter.  A Tilk buzzer beater put the Rams up 18-7 to end the first quarter of play.

Just two minutes into the second frame, Tilk had 16 of her 30 points.  The Rams continued to dominate throughout the quarter, taking a 33-20 lead into halftime.

Both teams ran into foul trouble in the third quarter.  The Rams shot 76.5 per cent throughout the second half from the free throw line.  Ryerson ended the third quarter by leading by 15 points, 48-33.

Ryerson received a scare at 4:21 of the fourth quarter when Tilk fell awkwardly and hit the floor favoring her left ankle.  Head coach Carly Clarke said Tilk’s injury wasn’t anything serious.  “I think she’s ok, we’ve got to take another look at her but she’s a pretty tough kid, so I think she’ll be alright,” said Clarke.

This was Clarke’s first game as Rams head coach.  She is coming over from the University of Prince Edward Island, where she spent the last three seasons leading the Panthers.  Clarke, along with the rest of her team is a fan of the new facilities, “We love it, it’s brand new, it’s bright, it’s exciting, it has everything we need.  We’re thrilled to be here,” said Clarke.

Assessing her team’s performance, Clarke was optimistic.  “I thought we played ok, it’s September 9, we’ve only had six practices, so I didn’t have too high of expectations but we executed and I thought we got better today,” said Clarke.

The Rams next take the court on October 5, when they travel to Guelph to face the Gryphons.
